I will briefly detail the main characters below+: All the main charactrs are members of the unofficial Coil detective agency run by Yasako’s grandmother Mega-baa, which exists to combat corruption and problems in the virtual world at the behest of Mega-baa. The “metabug” market is one of the main focuses of the first half of the series as its main characters are all very invested in it as a moneymaking opportunity.ĭennou Coil sports a fantastic and varied cast of charismatic characters who are all quite young and are remarkably multilayered and interesting people considering they are 11-year-old 6th graders. “Metabugs” are quite literally software bugs that can be manipulated into becoming another kind of bug by those with the right abilities, except they are bugs that can be helpful to a person who might be trying to escape Searchy due to being in possession of forbidden tools and “metabugs”. To combat this, there are the Searchy(s), the maintenance and antivirus bots which sweep the city to destroy and update obsolete space as well as to destroy any forbidden pets or tools that people might possess.ĭue to the existence of obsolete and damaged spaces, people with an adequate understanding of them are able to extract and find “metabugs”, which are valuable bugs from the virtual world that can be used to create special tools, tags, and so on. “Space” essentially entails the entire world the characters inhabit, and though most populated areas and those frequented by people are frequently updated, those that aren’t are at a danger of becoming damaged or obsolete, leading to strange phenomena. While the express purpose of the glasses is to fulfill the above what the main cast of this series ends up using them for is an amalgamation of a rather complex competitive game based around the limitations and drawbacks of the glasses as that fits into their personal conflicts and cliques as well as a legitimate effort to mine some profit out of the limitations of the augmented reality by making a profit through an underground unofficial virtual currency called “meta” (I will elaborate on this momentarily).Īt its core, the virtual world portrayed in Dennou Coil is sustained through the constant correction and updating of “space” as is described in the series. This manifests itself through glasses of differing varieties that children and adults wear with the main purpose being to assist them with daily activities, entertain them, and to communicate with others – basically your modern smartphone except it’s in the package of a google glass and completely untethered. In this post I hope to convince you to finally bite the bullet and tick Dennou Coil off your ever-expanding plan-to-watch list.ĭennou Coil is set in the year 2026 in Daikoku City where augmented reality reminiscent of the Pokemon Go phenomenon in the not too distant past is a staple of daily life for most people, and especially the lives of children. However, glancing over this amazing and severely underrated series like I did for far too long would be a massive mistake if I have anything to say about it. Dennou Coil is a seemingly unassuming series from 2007 that doesn’t really stick out when glancing over the wealthy catalogue of amazing shows that came out in that year. While the name Mitsuo Iso is a household name for any anime fan in and around sakuga circles as he is one of the best-respected and talented individuals in his field, his one (and currently only) directorial position in his career in the anime industry was on Dennou Coil.
